If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them.-In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. Less well known is the paradox of tolerance: Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. There's being tolerant of opposing viewpoints and there's allowing bad faith actors to use that tolerant landscape to eliminate any opposition which, by the way, includes you, presuming you are a believer in democracy. We are all CLEARLY talking about the pandemic of misinformation that plagues this country and is resulting in unsustainable percentages of our society turning it's back on democracy so they can get "their way" if they even know what that is. So, on what basis do you reach that conclusion? And how do you define "brainwashing" and "radicalizing"?Ĭome on.
